Milwaukee political pressure to add high-speed police chases bucks data

The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission, with the support of some Milwaukee Common Council members, is elevating a policy dispute with Mayor Tom Barrett and Police Chief Ed Flynn over when police officers should engage in high-speed pursuits into a showdown over managing public safety, controlling the police department and even continuing the Flynn's tenure.

The Commission is threatening Flynn with discipline, even dismissal, if he does not expand by July 27th the criteria for officers' engaging in high-speed pursuits. Barrett can overturn the Commission's order, so stay tuned.

Interesting that just as the issue picked up speed in Milwaukee City Hall, NBC National News said the City of Los Angeles was being urged by a data-driven grand jury report to curb such pursuits because of risks to public safety.
